The Most Globally Successful Contemporary Czech Authors

Our founder Marketa has her children book Polaris out soon, but she fits easily the modern comptemporary mould of dual origin, not just old money lass with class meets self made business girl. Her book is in English, but let’s add her to the list of the most globally compemporary Czech authors. We also publish her mockery Thank you letter to Meghan Markle.

Czech literature has two or three titans that influenced the world literature, beside the poet and the journalist Jan Neruda who lived at Lesser Prague Town and his surname was adopted by famous poet Pablo Neruda. Czech poet Jaroslav Seifert won the Nobel Prize, Karel Capek was widely translated and he created the famous word ,robot’ from his underestimated theatre play R.U.R. Only two authors of the novels, with certain sarcasm and deeply human story telling became famous after WW2. Bohumil Hrabal and Milan Kundera. There was somewhere between Kundera’s sharp intellectual style and Hrabal’s poetic, stream-of-consciousness style wedged the theatrical work by the screen writer and later the first post communist president Vaclav Havel.

More Czech writers have emmigrated from the communist Czechoslovakia after Prague Spring and Soviet occupation in August 1968, for example Toronto, Canada is linked with the third pillar of roaring, swinging 1960s and Josef Skvorecky. Only Hrabal stayed in Czechoslovakia, Skvorecky and Kundera became the professors in Canada and France respectively. Where Kundera was deeply philosophical and Hrabal was a poetic surrealist, Skvorecký brought a distinct vibe to Czech literature with jazz, humor, political resilience, and bittersweet irony. Hrabal iwas also highly translated and recognized abroad in the 1960s, but through a slightly different avenue: The Czechoslovak New Wave cinema. In 1965, Hrabal published Closely Watched Trains. Director Jiří Menzel adapted it into a film in 1966. The other known abroad film director was Milos Forman who emigrated to the USA and won his own Oscars. The movie became a global sensation and won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1968.

Skvorecký was a massive fan of American jazz and swing music, which was heavily suppressed under both the Nazi occupation and the Communist regime – later rock’n’roll actred as the rebel music, black music and jazz were widely accepted. He wrote the definitive literary portraits of how American music served as a form of political rebellion for young Czechs. His novel Super Season with Danny Smiricky was quoted by Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky has his favourite novel alongside The Egyptian by Mika Waltari. Skoverecky has his alter ego Danny across couple of his novels, the most famous Czech author Milan Kundera features Marketa twice in his both famous novels from Czechoslovakia and France oeriod. In Joke novel she lacks any humor and received the postcard. In The Book of Laugher and Forgetting , Markéta is the central female character in Part 2, titled “Mother”.

So who are the most known Czech authors nowadays ? The most known and successful Czech author was recently retired Michal Viewegh. The focus of very successful novels is still weaved around the strong or funny human stories and both female writers Alena Mornštajnová and Radka Třeštíková (Velikovsky) are great representatives of each genre. Radka Trestikova (Velikovsky for a new novel and possibly also planned international career) is nicknamed Viewegh in the skirts, Mornštajnova’s masterpiece Hana turned her into a global export translated into two dozen languages. Trestikova’s new novel was expected to be released on September 1st like Marketa B L Windsor’s children book Polaris abroad, Radka Trestikova aka Velikovsky halted the distribution like Gwyneth Paltrow apparently postponed .off record’ al fresco dinner with AI mogul.

Before we publish Marketa’s highly sarcastic Thank you letter to Meghan Markle, in flowery fake flattering Victorian style, similar to Kundera’s joke, let us to mention couple of under the radar or less promoted, but widely recognized Czech authors for either talent, the relative global success with translation or reach. There is still the big and cruel rule about the success – it is called a work regarding the promotion and sales, not just having a product of high quality and strong label or publishing house behind or number of translations. Kundera was based in France and he became legend for his completely seclude style, but he was already established known writer. No one can exists only in digital vacuum with overhyped Czech media presence such as Charlotte Gott, without one interview, the live concert, the tour. She has experienced the Harkles effect – the spike of the streaming and radio play for her first single, thanks to curiosity. Her single peaked to 46th of Czech top charts, but Czech radio station did not play her, other singles have not been placed on the radio play lists. The latest single had only 7000 streams on Spotify and her late father’s fans in Germany are too old and analogue to spin anything online, the young generation does not care, unless she comes and starts with the live performance to gain the momentum and the grassroot fandom. The same princip is also required from any book tour and media promotion, called heavy lifting. That’s something what Radka Trestikova does not realize at all.

Jaroslav Rudiš: Unique because he writes and publishes seamlessly in both Czech and German, making him a highly recognizable name in Central European literature. He recently won the German-Polish Krkonoše Prize for Literature, and his graphic novel adaptation Alois Nebel and novels like The Grand Hotel have given him a permanent footprint in foreign book markets. Marketa has attended Alois Nebel’s movie in London, UK years back.

Jáchym Topol: For readers of contemporary, edgy fiction, Topol is the definitive post-1989 Czech voice known to global audiences. His chaotic, brilliant prose style in books like City Sister Silver and Gargling with Tar has earned him widespread international translation and a reputation as a modern cult classic author.

Kateřina Tučková: An absolute powerhouse in both domestic sales and foreign licensing. Her breakthrough historical novel, The Žítková Goddesses (published in English as The Last Goddess), sold hundreds of thousands of copies and was translated into nearly 20 languages. Marketa’s maternal family hails from the region. Her follow-up novels, like Gerta, continue to be heavily pushed by major foreign publishers and recently turned into the movie.

Radka Denemarková: She is widely considered the most internationally successful living Czech author. She is the only writer to win the prestigious domestic Magnesia Litera award four times in different categories. Her sweeping, politically charged novels like Hours of Lead (inspired by her time in China) and Money from Hitler have been translated into more than 20 languages and have won massive acclaim across European and global publishing houses.

Magdaléna Platzová: She is making enormous waves in international publishing. Her book Life After Kafka (Leben nach Kafka) won the 2025 Bavarian Independent Book Award for fiction, solidifying her status as a highly prominent name in contemporary European literature.

Dora Kaprálová: She secured massive continent-wide recognition by being named the 2026 European Union Prize for Literature (EUPL) Laureate for her book Maribor Hypnosis (Mariborská Hypnóza).

Marketa’s mockery Thank you letter to Meghan Markle, dated from 28th of July 2026, sent from her corporate email of her IT tech cloud software company. Meghan Markle has not get the hillarious tone and subdued, quite British polite sense of humour with often Czech straighforward sarcastic black comedy joke at all, due to her possible personality disorder. She has contacted Gwyneth Paltrow and others about the possible relationship, something that she has already started by her badmouthing, as NHL and certain athletes and British people know well…

Chris Martin of Coldplay is mentioned only at the beginning and the rest of the letter with British polite manner of sending Thank you message, carries on about fake complimentary and fawning over Rachel Meghan Markle who does not get it as the cheeky joke and her own satire, already as the joke falling flat. It is visible who is a start up + grafter and who plays the role of the upstart + grifter.

Marketa has her natural strawberry glonde – ginger under the sun or the light = Sun at Austerlitz (Brno based) and her own LBD creation, mathsy, something like miniscule Johnny Buckland :]

I prostrate myself figuratively, though not without temptation, before
the magnitude of your benevolence in securing for me an introduction to
the illustrious Mr. Chris Martin of Coldplay. Such elevation of my
humble social standing is, oh dear Priestess of Hagiographia, I fear,

He remind me of a golden retriever for many reasons, such as Archibald and
Reginald have been my dear golden canine cuties at Sandringham, called
by the pet names Archie and Regie, also spotted in my video ages ago. As
Mr Jagr has cracked a joke one comment, as least some blondes that remain faithful to him.
I am so honoured your Magnitude Meghan has picked up this name for her
birth born sprawn with my dear ginger eagle cousin Harry-bald
Mountbatten. No offense to other sexy bald heads with the brain cells
and the crown jewells intact.

Permit me—nay, compel me—to extend my most theatrical gratitude for the
dazzling privilege of my introduction to that unparalleled specimen of
gentlemanhood. I had not imagined that such a creature could exist
outside the more fanciful chapters of satire about you, and yet, by your careful
orchestration, there he stood: gloriously real.

Your judgement in selecting such company for me shall not soon be
forgotten, though I suspect it may be diligently avoided. I am
profoundly humbled that you deemed me capable of enduring such a
spectacle without immediate collapse, though I cannot promise continued
resilience under similar acts of generosity.

Your Great Markleness’s discernment in arranging such a meeting is, as
ever (never), impeccable—if somewhat adventurous. I am left both enriched and
faintly astonished, like one who has sampled an exotic dish whose
ingredients remain a delightful mystery such as your plating mastery
with magic touch of your dry flower sprinkles.
